another year to add to my age

had a busy and interesting weekend. firstly, yours truly went out on saturday and did not bring the ez link card. after i was dropped off and was supposed to continue my way home myself, i opened the bag not finding the card. lucky i had some money so just hailed a cab and went back.
brother came back on saturday night. he was supposed to get home tonight. it's a good thing i did not apply for the half day leave. was thinking of taking half the day off to spend time by myself though, but then decided to spend it at work instead.
it's therapeutic to spend my time working (with a few stolen moments blogging too). at least it's time well spent. going out will mean spending money and i can't afford to do that at the moment. got a study loan to pay so have to spent whatever money i have really wisely. what better way it is than going to work and earn more money...heheh...
ok i'm talking crap now. better get back to work now. still another an hour and a half to go...

i'm very happy today

i'm very happy right now. just heard the very good news that the girl that i was helping out with her revision (september's blog) just passed her primary school leaving exams.
promised her to treat her anywhere she likes and now i will gladly do that. almost flunked my own assignments just to help her out. but now after hearing the good news, it's all worth it.
that's all i want to say today. here's something for your reading :

Many years ago in a small Indian village, a farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the farmer's beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the farmer's debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning money-lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter.
He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven. But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail.

All the villagers were standing on a pebble strewn path in the farmer's field. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag. Now, imagine you were standing in the field. What would you have done if you were the girl? If you had to advise her, what would you have told her?
Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:
1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.
2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose the money-lender as a cheat.
3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her father from his debt and imprisonment.
Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above story is used with the hope that it will make us appreciate the difference between lateral and logical thinking. The girl's dilemma can not be solved with traditional logical thinking. Think of the consequences if she chooses the above logical answers. What would you recommend to the girl to do?

Well, what she did was :
The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked."
Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that she had picked the white one. And since the money-lender dared not admit his dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Most complex problems do have a solution. It is only that we don't attempt to think
Impossible is a word only to be found in the dictionary of fools.

something i need to bitch about

saturday was a fine example of why i dread the season of Hari Raya nowadays. my uncle (mother's elder brother) called in the morning to declare (note : declare, not tell) he's coming over to our house in the evening after he knock off work. so mother said ok not knowing father wants to go visiting the same evening. a bit of chaos happened when father woke up and declared we are going out visiting.
as expected mother started panicking and grumbling. sister sms to cousin saying we are going out. if they insist on coming they are to give us a call first. a few hours later, the uncle called again and by a stroke of (bad) luck mother answered the call. he still insisted on coming over. she said please call first before coming.
when we were at another of mother's elder brother's house, cousin called sister and told us they are on the way. at the same time, elder cousin (the sister) sms me to say they are on the way. if we are still not home then they will not come again and will probably come only next year.
so what's the problem? mother started panicking again. feels so bad since it's her brother. says he's definitely angry at her and will never come over to our house again. well it's their problem right? we are not responsible to what he wants to feel. if he's not coming over again then fine. means 1 less family to entertain. he even called my aunt (his' & mother's youngest sister) to come home from where they were just so that they can visit her house. is this the way to visit other people's houses. demanding them to come home just because you want come over? like the world revolves around you just because you are the elder one.
if there is nobody at home or wants to go out, then go somewhere else or just go home then. anyway, do you have to wait for Hari Raya to visit your own siblings? what about the other ordinary days? this is not the true meaning of Hari Raya. true, it's the time to strengthen ties with both family and non-family (friends/colleagues/etc). but you don't have to do it only during this time. you can do it anytime. just because you are the elder it also doesn't mean you can demand those younger than you to respect you. you have to earn that respect and i'm sorry to say i've lost a little bit of respect to my uncle due to this. don't get me wrong. i will still greet him and show him respect as deserved to an elder, but what i feel towards him will not be the same. same goes to the cousins.
ok finally got that out of my chest now. take this with a pinch of salt. this is only what's in my mind. what you perceive of it may not be what i'm trying to say.

it's friday!!

how time flies. it's friday already. engine's still not oiled properly yet. i'm still in a holiday mood. note it's holiday mood, not Hari Raya mood.

lots to do at work but it's not done yet. everytime i get to doing it i'll start procrastinating yet again. and the new project engineer's not making things any easier. thought the current engineer is bad, the new one is starting to make my life a living hell all over again. he's trying to apply the private sector's method to the government sector. for this to work you have to start slow. he's trying to implement everything at once. i admit, the end result will tremendously help in our filing system, but only if the auditors will give our project a miss for now. just hope and pray that we won't get audited. this will definitely give us much more time and energy to implement it properly and not give us a headache. heheh...

ok need to ZZzzzZZ a while now. it's lunchtime already, and lunchtime is the time for me to do what i want. now what they want. that's the purpose of lunchtime right...

back at work

i'm back at work now. almost felt like taking another day off after being on leave for so long. but then if i were to feel this way everytime then i won't go anywhere right :)

spent the first half of the day clearing off my mails. even with my out of office notification turned on i still receive soooo much mails from friends. the same attachments sent from at least 3 different people. don't you understand the meaning of being out of office. i'm sure you wouldn't want to receive such huge mails when you are not in. i have to sort out the personal and official mails before i can start clearing them. sheesh...

Hari Raya was ok. lots of houses i went to had lesser cookies than last year. and will you all please stop with, i quote, "Bila nak makan nasi minyak?" or "Ada bau nasi minyak ke belum ni?". you think it's easy nowadays to find a man? looking for fish in the market is much easier than looking for a life partner. i'm very happy as i am right now. why brood over something that you don't have? it's much better to be happy as you are, be it being single or with someone.

ok back to work now. happy working!!

it's the last day of Ramadhan

it's the last day of Ramadhan today. what have i done the past month? hmmm...sad to say not much. anyway, no use brooding over what's past. reflect on it and do better next time.

anyway to all muslim brothers and sisters : SELAMAT HARI RAYA, MAAF ZAHIR BATIN, if there has been any mistakes on my part.

haven't done anything

the purpose of taking this whole week off is to help clean the house to prepare for Hari Raya. so far, all i've done is just sweep the floor every other day and now i'm sick. it's really dusty here and i have got a major nose block. started off with the sore throat associated with too much sneezing and now i feel like pulling off my nose off my face.

my sister coming back doesn't really help either. she just brought even more chaos into this already messy house. it's 5 days now and her stuff are still lying around here and there. finally started to cut the cloth to make the bottom of my Hari Raya outfit. hope to finish the whole suit by today. decided not to make any cookies or brownies cos it's too much of a bother now. didn't get any stuff ready and i can't be bothered to go and buy them now.

*portion deleted*
(what was i thinking??!!)

anyway, this is only what i'm feeling now. i'm entitled to be feel whatever i want. don't say anything cause it won't make any difference. i am what i am.

4 down...12 more to go

finished exams for this semester. took only 1 module so i'm free till the next lesson that starts on 24th Nov. so that will give me about 3 weeks of free time to relax my brains.

lots to do now. first is to sew the bottom of my Hari Raya outfit. next clean the house. then maybe i'll consider baking cookies for Hari Raya. don't have the celebration mood to celebrate Hari Raya anymore nowadays. it's just not the same as last time. maybe it's all the stress from work and night classes, i don't know.

anyway, will be free from work till 16th Nov. clearing my annual leave. now that i can't commute my leave to receive salary, might as well clear it now. it's the best time. can spend it resting during the fast.

:(:(:(:(

i have a swollen gum right now and the right side of my head feels like there's something/somebody pounding on it, inside and outside.

what a timing. i want, or should i say, i need to study now. i have an exam paper to take on thursday and i'm not finished revising. really wish the pain will go away :(

on leave from tomorrow

another 16 mins and i'm out of here. will be on leave and will come back to work on 16th Nov. no more mood to do anymore work for the most difficult person i've ever met.

said there'll be an audit on the quality file next week. well go and do it yourself now since u said i'm not systematic. i don't know how systematic you want it to be. never had any problems with other engineers. anyway there's a new engineer here who's very knowlegdeable of quality filing. hope he's not as fussy as this guy.

ok that's all for now folks. will update again from home if i feel like it...heheh..

i want to cry

i felt like crying just now. it's not easy working with someone who wants things done his way and only his. if that's the case there's no need for me to go and check if it can be done or not. i can just request for it to be done and save my breath. he didn't have to raise his voice at me. and this wasn't the first time. there were a few other times when he told, no ordered me to do something with a raised voice.

i am not a child where a raised voice will bring fear to myself. i am an adult and so is he (i think). all he has to do is just tell me to get the work done and i'll be more than happy to do it since it is my job afterall. i didn't come here to just stare at the computer and blog away everyday. i didn't pursue further studies to just laze around and do nothing. i came here to work and work i will.

he thinks he's so high up there just because he has a slip of paper with a degree written on it. well i'm on my way to get that slip of paper too, so hah!!

ok now i feel much better. and thanks to the angels who helped me get better too. you should know who you are dears ;-)

have to get started again

i really have to start on my workout schedule again. haven't been doing any serious workout except for brisk walking. and that is only when i'm going to work and coming back home. i make it a point to walk from home to the mrt station in the morning and back in the evening.

3 years of intensive workout and suddenly stopping is definitely not a good idea. the latest you can totally stop if you regularly workout is up to 2 months. after that it's back from scratch. i don't mind the starting from scratch workout but the sagging of the muscles that you have toned over the years is what's really bothering me now. it's worse than fats!!! you look all flabby where u used to be toned and firm. i can't bear looking into the mirror. makes me want to cry :*(

it's not that i don't have the time at all or the equipment. you don't need much of those. just 15-20 mins each day is enough. it's the motivation that i lack now. even looking into the mirror doesn't give the push to make me start. i know, i know, i'm a big procrastinator.it's the worst habit to have but you just can't shake it off just like that. ok now that i've confessed i'm going to do something tonight. if i don't then bite me...hahah!!

it's the 12th day of Ramadhan already. almost half gone. what have you done so far? i'm trying my best to recite the Qur'an daily. don't think i can finish it but i'm doing what i can. work and studies are taking up most of my time. exam's next week and i'm taking another week off to clear my leave. can't wait...YIPPEEE!!!

here's something for the day (or till the next update) :

five days already

it's already the fifth day of Ramadhan. how are you all feeling? still strong i hope. here's something i extracted from a website recommended from a friend :

Fasting - A Natural Nutrition Therapy
By Dr. Elson M. Haas

Fasting is the “missing link” in the Western diet as most people there over-eat.

Fasting is the single greatest natural healing therapy. It is nature’s ancient, universal “remedy” for many problems. Animals instinctively fast when ill. When I first discovered fasting, 15 years ago, I felt as if it had saved my life and transformed my illnesses into health. My stagnant energies began flowing, and I became more creative and vitally alive. I still find fasting both a useful personal tool and an important therapy for many medical and life problems.

Of course, most of the problems for which I recommend fasting as treatment are ones that result from over-nutrition rather than malnutrition. Dietary abuse problems, more common in the Western world than in Third World countries, generate many of the chronic degenerative diseases that I have written so much about; these include atherosclerosis, hypertension and heart disease, allergies, diabetes, and cancer. I believe that fasting is therapeutic and, more importantly, preventive for many of these conditions and more.

Fasting (cleansing, detoxification) is one part of the triology of nutrition; balancing and building (toning) are the others. I believe that fasting is the “missing link” in the Western diet. Most people over-eat, eat too often, and eat a high-protein, high-fat, rich-food, building and congesting diet more consistently than they need. If we regularly eat a more balanced and well-combined diet, we will have less need for fasting and toning plans, although both would still be required at certain intervals throughout the year.

In a sense, detoxification is an important corrective and rejuvenative process in our cycle of nutrition. It is a time when we allow our cells and organs to breathe out, become current, and restore themselves. We do not necessarily need to fast to experience some cleansing, however. Minor shifts in the diet such as including more fluids, more raw foods, and fewer congesting foods will allow for better detoxification; for a carnivore, for example, a vegetarian or macrobiotic diet will be cleansing and purifying.

Fasting is a time-proven remedy. Its use goes back many thousands of years, really to the beginning of life forms. Voluntary abstinence from food has been a tradition in most religions and is clearly a spiritual purification rite. Many religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and the Eastern religions, have encouraged fasting for a variety of reasons, such as penitence, preparation for ceremony, purification, mourning, sacrifice and union with God, and the enhancement of knowledge and powers. From Moses, Elijah, and Daniel to Christ, the Bible is filled with fasters, who employed it to assist their purification and communion with God. Fasts as long as 40 days were employed to cleanse people of sins and the “devil.”

Light Suhoor and Lighter Iftar!
By Mohammad Zafar A. Nomani

A balanced diet is sufficient to keep a person healthy and active during the month of Ramadan

Fasting during the Islamic month of Ramadan can be good for one’s health and personal evelopment. Ramadan fasting is not just about disciplining the body to restrain from eating food and drinking water from predawn until sunset. The eyes, the ears, the tongue, and even the private parts are equally obligated to be restrained if a Muslim wants to gain the total rewards of fasting. Ramadan is also about restraining anger, doing good deeds, exercising personal discipline, and preparing oneself to serve as a good Muslim and a good person during and after Ramadan.

This is why the Messenger of Allah (Pbuh) has been attributed, by Hazrat Abu Hurairah in the Hadith, to say: “He who does not desist from obscene language and acting obscenely (during the period of fasting), Allah has no need that he didn’t eat or drink.” (Bukhari, Muslim). In another Hadith by Hazrat Abu Hurairah, the Prophet (Pbuh) said: “Fasting is not only from food and drink, fasting is to refrain from obscene (acts). If someone verbally abuses you or acts ignorantly toward you, say (to them) ‘I am fasting; I am fasting.”

Ramadan fasting has spiritual, physical, psychological, and social benefits; however, man-made problems may occur, if fasting is not properly practised. First of all, there is no need to consume excess food at iftar (the food eaten immediately after sunset to break fast), dinner or sahur ( the light meal generally eaten about half an hour to one hour before dawn). The body has regulatory mechanisms that activate during fasting. There is efficient utilisation of body fat, basal metabolism slows down during Ramadan fasting and a diet that is less than a normal amount of food intake, but balanced is sufficient enough to keep a person healthy and active during the month of Ramadan. Health problems can emerge as a result of excess food intake

Here is a Dietary Plan1.
Bread/Cereal/Rice, Biscuits and Cracker Group: 6-11 servings/day; 2. Meat/Beans/ Nut Group: 2-3 servings/day. 3. Milk and Milk Product Group: 2-3 servings/day. 4. Vegetable Group: 3-5 servings/day; 5. Fruit Group: 2-4 servings/day. 6. Added sugar (table sugar, sucrose): sparingly. 7. Added fat, polyunsaturated oil 4-7 table spoons

Iftar:
Three Dates
Juice- 1 serving (4 oz.)
Vegetable soup- 1 cup
The body’s immediate need at the time of iftar is to get an easily available energy source in the form of glucose for every living cell, particularly the brain and nerve cells. Dates and juices are good sources of sugars. Dates and juice in the above quantity are sufficient to bring low blood glucose levels to normal levels. Juice and soup help maintain water and mineral balance in the body. An unbalanced diet and too many servings of sherbets and sweets with added sugar have been found to be unhealthy.

Dinner:
Consume foods from all the following food groups:
Meat/Bean Group: Chicken, beef, lamb, goat, fish, 1-2 servings (serving size = a slice =1 oz); green pea, chickpea, green gram, black gram, lentil and other beans, 1 serving (half cup). Meat and beans are a good source of protein, minerals, and certain vitamins. Beans are a good source of dietary fibre, as well.

Bread/Cereal Group: Whole wheat bread, 2 servings (serving size = 1 oz) or cooked rice, one cup or combination. This group is a good source of complex carbohydrates, which are a good source of energy and provide some protein, minerals and dietary fibre.

Milk Group: milk or butter-milk (lassi without sugar), yogurt or cottage cheese (one cup). Those who cannot tolerate whole milk must try fermented products such as butter-milk and yogurt. Milk and dairy products are good sources of protein and calcium, which are essential for body tissue maintenance and several physiological functions.

Vegetable Group: Mixed vegetable salad, 1 serving (one cup), (lettuce, carrot, parsley, cucumber, broccoli, coriander leaves, cauliflower or other vegetables as desired.) Add 2 teaspoons of any polyunsaturated oil and 2 spoons of vinegar. Polyunsaturated fat provides the body with essential fatty acids and keto acids. Cooked vegetables such as beans, bhindi, baigan, bottle -gourd , cabbage, spinach, 1 serving (4 oz). Vegetables are a good source of dietary fibre. These are helpful in the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and many other health problems.

Fruits Group: 1-2 servings of citrus and/or other fruits. Eat fruits as the last item of the dinner or soon after dinner, to facilitate digestion and prevent many gastrointestinal problems. Citrus fruits provide vitamin C. Fruits are a good source of dietary fibre.

Pre-dawn Meal (sahur):Consume a light sahur. Eat whole wheat or oat cereal or whole wheat bread, 1-2 serving with a cup of milk. Add 2-3 teaspoons of any polyunsaturated fats in a salad or the cereal. Eat 1-2 servings of fruits, as a last item.

During Ramadan increased gastric acidity is often noticed, exhibiting itself with symptoms such as a burning feeling in the stomach, a heaviness in the stomach, and a sour mouth. Whole wheat bread, vegetables, beans, and fruits are an excellent source of dietary fibre which helps reduce gastric acidity and excess bile acids. Peptic ulcer patients should avoid spicy foods and consult a doctor for appropriate medicine and diet. Diabetic people, particularly severe type I (insulin dependent) or type II (non-insulin dependent), must consult their doctor for the type and dosage of medicine, and diet and precautions to be taken during the month. Generally diabetes mellitus, type II, is manageable through proper diet during Ramadan

• Drink sufficient water between Iftar and sleep to avoid dehydration
• Consume sufficient vegetables at meals. Eat fruits at the end of the meal
• Avoid intake of high sugar foods through sweets or other forms.
• Avoid spicy foods.
• Avoid caffeine drinks such as coke or coffee. Caffeine is a diuretic. Three days to five days before Ramadan gradually reduce the intake of these drinks. A sudden decrease in caffeine prompts headaches, mood swings and irritability.
• Smoking is a health risk factor. Avoid smoking cigarettes.
• Do not forget to brush or Miswak. Brush your teeth before sleep and after sahur.
• Normal or overweight people should not gain weight. For overweight people Ramadan is an excellent opportunity to lose weight.
• It is recommended that everyone engage in some kind of light exercise, such as stretching or walking.

Ramadhan is here again

the blessed month of Ramadhan is here again. so to all muslim brothers and sisters, SELAMAT MENUNAIKAN IBADAH PUASA, SEMOGA BULAN INI MEMBERI PENUH BERKAT.
this month will always bring back the memories of the loooongest hospital stay i had. date of admission : 3rd Jan 97, date of discharge : 13th Jan 97, date of re-admission : 22nd Jan 97, date of discharge : 30th Jan 97. that was the longest month of my life. what made it even worse is that i spent the night before Hari Raya in hospital. listening to the 'takbir' thru the radio made my eyes tear. the most touching part is seeing most of the people i know taking their time to come and see me in the hospital. the friend who waited for me when i was in the operating theatre. the friends who came more than once to bring other friends. and the friends who even visited me at home to bring the latest notes because i was not able to go to school.
not forgetting my own family who did all they can to help me get better, especially my mother. she will come and visit me almost everyday. and my father who will come at night after he gets off from work and drive a cab part time. the day when i was allowed to go home for Hari Raya really makes me smile now. that was the day i had to go around with the hospital tag on my hand. the day when everyone else are decked in jewelry i was walking around with that special 'bracelet'...heheh...
this was also when i was not able to fast the whole month. eventually manage to compensate the whole month before the next Ramadhan. even inspired other friends who had yet to compensate their fast to join me :D
to all muslim brothers and sisters, make full use of this month. who knows if you can live to the next month of Ramadhan or not. live your life as though it is your last day.

i need sleep

it's been a year since i've taken up the part time studies and it's been the same time since i've had a decent night's sleep. it was made worse recently by bed bugs.
these bugs came about somewhere last year. at first it infected my brother's room. we discovered that the table that our neighbour exchanged with us were the breeding ground for these pests. they 'took over' his bed, then were 'carried' outside to the living room, my parents room next and now MY ROOM!! it's such a nuisance. i have to do inspection before sleeping now, and each inspection will take at least 15 mins - to check every crevice in the mattress and pillow.
mother helped to spray insecticide and i ended up just laying my bed cover on the floor and slept there. now my back is really stiff from spending the whole night on the floor. couldn't sleep properly either, kept waking up every few hours just thinking of those pests. i am willing to do anything to kill them. almost wanted to take every item infected down and just burn them. that was how frustrated i felt. it's like they've taken over the house.
do you know just how disturbing it is to have some creepy crawlies living with you. i'm not a squirmish person. i can crush any cockroach and pick it up by the feelers with my bare hands but when it comes to this blood sucking pests it just freaks me out. just imagine something crawling on you when you sleep and suck your blood. even mosquitoes sounds much better :D

here's some information about these creepy crawlies for those who wants to read about it :

Bed bugs are in the insect family Cimicidae and include three species that attack people. Of these, the most important is Cimex lectularius, which may also bite bats, birds, and rodents.
Cimex lectularius is a cosmopolitan species, most frequently found in the northern temperate climates of North America, Europe, and Central Asia. It occurs more sporadically in southern temperate regions. In Florida and tropical regions it is replaced by C. hemipterus. Problems with bed bug infestations used to be quite severe, but with the use of DDT after World War II the incidence of these pests has been greatly reduced, although infestations still do occur. Currently this insect can be a pest wherever sanitary conditions are primitive, or if there are birds or mammals nesting on or near a house. Crowded and dilapidated housing can also facilitate the insect's movement between residences.

IDENTIFICATION AND LIFE CYCLE
Adult bed bugs are oval, wingless, about 1/5 inch long, and rusty red or mahogany in color. Their bodies are flattened, they have well-developed antennae, their compound eyes are small, and the area behind the head (the prothorax) expands forward on either side of the head. The immatures appear identical to the adults except for their smaller size, thinner cuticle, and a lighter, yellowish white color. Bed bugs are readily distinguished from another more common bloodsucking species, conenose bugs,
by their smaller size, more rounded shape, and lack of wings as adults.
Female bed bugs lay from 200 to 500 eggs (in batches of 10 to 50) on rough surfaces such as wood or paper. Eggs are covered with a glue and hatch in about 10 days. After hatching, the egg shells frequently remain on the substrate. There are five progressively larger nymphal stages, each requiring a single blood meal before molting to the next stage. The entire life cycle from egg to adult requires anywhere from 5 weeks to 4 months, depending on temperature. When temperatures are in the range of 70° to 82°F, development occurs most rapidly. Nymphs and adults generally feed at night and hide in crevices during the day. Common hiding places include seams in mattresses and box springs, cracks in bed frames, under loose wallpaper, behind picture frames, and inside furniture and upholstery.
Bed bugs can go without feeding for 80 to 140 days; older stages can survive longer without feeding than younger ones. Adults have survived without food for as long as 550 days. A bed bug can take six times its weight in blood, and feeding can take 3 to 10 minutes. Adults live about 10 months and there can be up to 3 to 4 generations of bed bugs per year.
Occasionally bed bugs may be picked up in theaters, on buses and trains, or brought into homes on clothing, bedding, luggage, or firewood. Bed bugs that live on other mammals and birds found near the home (chickens, mice, rats, and rabbits) may under certain circumstances feed on humans if their primary hosts are removed.

DAMAGE
Bed bugs are not usually considered to be disease carriers. They do suck blood from their host with piercing mouthparts that contain two stylets: one stylet has a groove that carries saliva into the wound, while the other has a groove through which body fluids from the host are imbibed. Saliva that is injected during the feeding can produce large swellings on the skin that itch and may become irritated and infected when scratched. In addition, bed bugs have stink glands that leave odors; they also leave fecal spots on bed sheets and around their hiding places.

MANAGEMENT
Infestations of bed bugs can be detected by looking for their fecal spots, egg cases, and exuviae (shed skins) under wallpaper, behind picture frames, and inside cracks and crevices near beds. Carefully inspect the bed frame, undersides of windows, door casings, and loose moldings.
Indirect measures can go a long way in controlling bed bugs: keep bats and birds away from houses; clean furnishings, launder bedding and mattress pads, and steam-clean mattresses; and prevent bed bugs from getting into homes by removing debris from around the house, repairing cracks in walls, and caulking windows and doors.
Simple physical control methods include standing the legs of beds in soapy water, coating the legs with petroleum jelly or double-sided sticky tape. Bed bugs cannot climb polished glasss or metal easily and they don't fly, so that the legs of beds can also be placed inside glass jars or metal cans. Heating to 97° to 99°F will kill most bed bugs, as will temperatures below 48°F.
Chemical control includes the use of a residual insecticide (usually pyrethroids) in cracks and crevices. Sprays containing natural pyrethrins can also be used. Sorptive dusts such as fumed silica (also called diatomaceous earth) are useful in closed, hard-to-reach places. These treatments are best done by a professional pesticide applicator.

cold, wet morning today

it's a cold & wet morning today. well it's been raining on & off since yesterday so i pretty much expected the weather to continue this way till the end of today.
both me n mother slept thru our alarm clock this morning. we wanted to wake up for sahur to fast. she woke me up at 5.30am. Subuh is 5.35am so i didn't bother to wake up. i'll just continue fasting.
it was my brother's birthday yesterday. so HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY JO!!
had a peaceful day the past 2 days. the kid didn't come over. she called on tuesday but then she have not done any work yet so i told her to do some self study for 2 days. promised to teach her tonight.
something's wrong with my 'baby'. it won't 'wake up' after i put it to 'sleep'. my 'baby' is my iBook. something went wrong eversince i self printed my vacation pictures about 2 months ago. it went to sleep mode and won't wake up after i hit the mouse pad, keyboard or esc keys. now i've got to bring it to the service centre for a 'check up'. i've got loads of stuff in there. like songs & movies i downloaded and pictures i stored from my digi cam. the technician i spoke to said it could be a software fault. well as long as they don't reformat the computer i'm ok to whatever they want to do to it. hope i won't get charged for the service. it's still under warranty. i topped up another $300 plus for an extended warranty of 2 years. there's still another 1 yr plus to go.
last night i cleared my mails which i have not cleared for almost a year. mostly mobile phone & internet bills, bank statements and CPF statements. some cleaning bug took over me just when i was about to sleep. my mother's threat to just clear them also played a part to...heheeh
what i did was just sort them according to the category above but have not filed them yet. which reminds me to get another file. the current file is getting to fat to stuff more bills/statements in. this can wait till when i'm taking my leave in 1 month's time. exams coming and have to clear my leave. so the best time to clear leave is during festive season, in my case Hari Raya. will be taking about 2 weeks off, including exam leave. WOOOHOOO!!!
will get to greet my sis who'll be coming back for her summer vacation from studies. the last time she came home my exams haven't even started yet. only manage to spend some crazy time with her after my last paper. didn't sleep the whole night. she accompanied me not sleeping too. then father came back with prata. we had prata at 3am. then decided spontaneously to fast the following day. met up with her and a neighbour after my paper. by the time we were on the way home, we were literally dragging ourselves. at least i was...heheheh...
don't know when my bro is coming home though. said he doesn't feel like coming home now. this coming from someone who called home twice a day, sent messages on my mobile saying he misses it back home and feels like coming back. hah!!
let's wait and see who comes home first ok.

i'm frustrated

have you ever been so frustrated with somebody or something that you just feel like screaming or crying right there? i'm going through it now.
i'm helping a kid from my neighbouring block for her exams. she's taking PSLE next month and her mum asked me to help her revise. i'm not giving tuition at all. just helping as and when she needs help with her homework or revision. so i said ok, i can help only when i'm free. turned out she comes everyday till i'm neglecting my own work. i've got an assignment due on 8th October and i haven't even started on it yet.
so back to the kid. by coming everyday she's showing that she's serious about her studies. so i'm happy to help anybody who show's that they are eager to learn. it's a waste of time if you teach someone who's not willing to learn and only comes when they are forced to.
this kid hates science. i don't see why you can hate the subject. science is happening in our everyday life that you can't ignore it. the best you can do or show even if you don't like it is a slight interest of at least how something goes on. for her, everytime she brings her science books over, the way she's studying is making me want to tie her to the back of the chair to make her sit up. then she'll start yawning and yawning till you just want to slap her to make her wake up. i almost snapped yesterday when she said she don't know what 'flooding' means. oh my god!!!
i have been trying my best to make the lesson interesting to her by giving demonstrations and explaining slowly as much as i can. i can say i'm doing not too bad considering i took my PSLE 15 years ago. but it seems like this kid has switched off herself to science. she likes maths. she has at least another 4 years of science to go. if she doesn't start showing interest she's not going to make it at all.
it's nisfu sya'ban tomorrow night. here's something you can do on the night. ladies, if you are in your 'red light' then you can just recite the do'a.

1. Selepas solat maghrib (15 Sya'aban, Jumaat malam) Solat sunat nisfu sya'aban, 2 rakaat.
Rakaat 1 : baca Al-Fatihah & surah Al-Qadar 1x
Rakaat 2 : baca Al-Fatihah & surah Al-Ikhlas 3x
2. Membaca Yasin 3x selepas solat Maghribnya (15 Sya'aban, Jumaat malam)
3. Baca surah ikhlas 1000x
4. Berpuasa pada siangnya (Khamis) Abul Khair Al Talaqaani r.a. mengira nama2 malam Nisfu Syaaban sebanyak 22

Antaranya yg termasyhur adalah:
1. Malam Dimustajabkan Doa
2. Malam Pembahagian Takdir
3. Malam Rahmat
4. Malam Berkat
5. Malam Pengampunan (Taubat)
6. Malam Penebusan
7. Malam Syafaat
8. Malam Penulisan
9. Malam Keagungan dan Kemuliaan
10. Malam Rezeki
11. Malam Hari Raya Para Malaikat
12. Malam Penghidupan

Antara kelebihan bulan Sya'aban:

Wallahua'alam

had a fun day today

went to east coast park in the morning for a walk a jog. only Mar n Suzie registered. last yr Nora, Mai, Sharm n me went to MacRitchie for the walk a jog. this year, Nora has a project commisioning this week, Sharm has a meeting n Mai's plain lazy to come this time..heheh
well 3 of us walked the whole distance. we thought we weren't the last ones as there were several guys behind us. to our surprise when we turned at the halfway point we found ourselves the only ones turning!! oh well, it's the sportsmanship that counts rite :)
we saw the president who was taking his daily morning walk there with his bodyguard. he kept his head down most of the time except when members of the public greets him. after the event i hanged around the beach with some colleagues who i was hitching a ride with to go back to office. we had our brunch at the coffeeshop. the younger ones went to MacDonald's for their food. i'm staying away from fast food as much as i can now. the only thing i'm missing is french fries. i've been fasting the past month (on n off) and controlling what i eat. i find that i feel much lighter now since i don't eat much anymore. i feel really great. haven't been doing any exercises lately too so this is the best i can do to stay the way i am. it's harder to lose what you gain when you've hit 25. this is when your metabolic rate starts to slow down and not burn as much as before. once you hit 30 then you'd better be extra careful. that's when your body stops stops producing calcium, unless you take supplements. you will lose your muscle mass and gain more fat mass. therefore before all this starts to happen, i'd better maintain what i am right now...kwa...kwa...kwa...
so, anyway, i had plain naan with keemah (minced meat curry). the keemah was really 'power'. filled me all the way till dinner time. after eating we found a shelter to sit at and the guys started telling each other crappy jokes. guys will always be guys. no matter how old they are, and whether married or not, a father or not, their crap will never change.
afternoon was back in the office. back to work. i'm much more happier working right now than when i was first informed about the re-structuring done in my team. my immediate supervisor, the Project Manager is a 'by the book' guy. everything you do must go through him first. if not he'll definitely not be happy about it and will give u a very long n sour face. lately he's been a bit less sour and the reason was soon given when it was announced that his wife gave birth to their first child last week. so now it's less of a torture working with him now. thank god.
the rest of the day passed by without any incidents. i'm going to upload the pics i took at east coast now. will share them soon.
good nite.

updates

hello. haven't been blogging lately. just got back from a rather controversial wedding. 2 former colleagues of mine got married. his second marriage n her first but she's been engaged to another person before. kinda complicated but well this is a complicated world we live in.

anyway it went rather smoothly. this was the shortest wedding dinner i've ever attended. all wedding dinner i attended normally end about 10pm but this one ended at about 9pm. really early for a dinner but well she did say she's making a really simple affair. the couple looks happy. i really hope their marriage will last forever. then went out with 2 ex-colleagues after the wedding for a drink n catch up. both of them now have 2 children each. it's really nice to hear of people who still believe in the sanctity of marriage.

the week was rather uneventful. only highlight (other than just now) was on Thursday. i was supposed to do some auditing or ICT equipment to one of the specialised unit of the police force. it was suppose to be a whole day event but my part was completed around 11.30am. so my colleague, who was the one conducting the audit, told me i can go off but not to go back to the office. well that was my opportunity to go shopping. i wanted to get a hindi vcd so the best place is Mustafa Centre at serangoon.

after reaching Farrer Park station, i kinda lost my sense of direction and made one big round at Race Course Rd and ended up where i started from. turned out i made one wrong turn n missed my direction by just a few metres. this NEL exits are really confusing man. so reached my destination safe & sound and started my round. i ended up buying over $30 worth of food and another $10 on the vcd. food was mainly soup powder (bought tomato soup, mushroom soup & mixed veges soup). i'm so into soup right now. great way to fill u up without making u feel too heavy.

yesterday after my class i took the mrt back. sat next to someone having a cold n now my face feels soooo heavy and my head feels like it's double it's size. just sprayed some nose drops to clear the nose but it still feels like there's something trying to drill itself outside my face. really aching. even chocolates didn't help much :(

ok will have to stop writing now. have to get sleep. don't know how i can sleep with this ache but still have to get some shut eye. if this gets worse maybe i'll have to take MC on monday...heheh

signing off now...

what a wonderful day

it's monday again!! a brand new day, brand new week (well officially a week starts on sunday but a new workday is monday...if you know what i mean...)

it's an exceptionally sunny and clear day today. have you ever appreciated the the sun? i know i sure didn't appreciate it before whenever i want to sleep in and the sun will be shining really brightly to wake me up. heheh...

but then eversince a condo was built right next to my block and literally blocked the sunrise from my view i find that i miss the sun shining on my face. it also takes some eye opening incident to make me realise how short life is, and it can be taken from you in the blink of an eye, to make me appreciate the work of God. well i had another incident years ago but i'll tell you when i feel like writing it.

well had a surprise when i got in the office today. my boss' wife just gave birth a bit early (didn't even know she's pregnant), so he's taken the whole week off. so i'm left on my own for this week (YIPPEEEE!!!). lot's to do. i've got filing to be backed up and sent for registry filing. will take me a few days to complete but with no boss to add more work i'll finish this up in no time at all...heheh

anyway here's something that you should keep in mind. for those non-malay readers i'll try and translate this when i find the time ;)

Banyakkan bersenyum, bersedekah, bersyukur dgn memuji Allah, berselawat & berzikrullah......itulah hebatnya kita kaum muslimin jadi janganlah ada lagi ungkapan "MONDAY BLUES!!!!"
